Morning traditions

The official programme begins at 8:00 AM on Kossuth Square with the traditional flag-raising ceremony and the inauguration of officers.

Later in the morning, a spectacular military and air show takes place above the Danube. The show can be viewed from several points along the riverbanks and offers a unique perspective of Budapest’s skyline.

Street of Hungarian Flavors

From 9:00 AM until midnight, the Street of Hungarian Flavors (Ízek utcája) welcomes visitors along the Danube embankment in front of the Castle Garden Bazaar (Várkert Bazár).

This is an excellent opportunity to discover Hungarian cuisine and regional specialties while enjoying the atmosphere of the celebrations close to Buda Castle.

Discover Buda Castle

One of the highlights for guests staying on the Buda side is the annual Festival of Folk Arts (Mesterségek Ünnepe) at Buda Castle.

The festival brings together Hungarian and international craftspeople, traditional artisans, folk music, dance and authentic Hungarian handicrafts. The nearby Protestant Gathering (Protestáns Sokadalom) adds further cultural and community programmes to the area.

Liberty Square: The square becomes a relaxed community meeting place featuring a gastro garden (gasztrokert).

Műegyetem Embankment: Live music and concerts continue throughout the day along the Danube.

The Holy Right Hand Procession

At 7:00 PM, the traditional Holy Right Hand Procession (Szent Jobb-körmenet) begins in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica following the festive Holy Mass.

This historic religious tradition is one of the most important ceremonial moments of St. Stephen’s Day and offers visitors an opportunity to experience an important part of Hungary’s cultural heritage.

The day culminates in Budapest’s spectacular St. Stephen’s Day fireworks, illuminating the Danube and the city’s historic landmarks.
